All bathrobes look alike on a hook, but the weave changes everything: how warm the robe feels, how fast it dries, and whether you'll actually want to wear it around the house. Here's a simple guide to the three most common cotton robe fabrics.
Terry cloth is woven with lots of small loops of yarn, the same construction as most bath towels. Those loops hold a lot of water and feel plush.
Waffle weave has a raised grid pattern that traps a little air. It's lighter than terry, still absorbent, and dries much faster, which is why it's a favorite in spas.
Muslin robes are made from several thin layers of open-weave cotton gauze. The layers create a soft, slightly crinkled fabric that lets air move through it, so it feels cool on warm days and cozy on cool ones. It also gets softer with every wash.
| Terry | Waffle | Muslin | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | Heavy | Medium | Light |
| Breathability | Low | Good | Excellent |
| Drying time | Slow | Fast | Fast |

Linen is another breathable natural fiber with a relaxed, slightly textured look. If you love an oversized, kimono-style silhouette, take a look at our Zen linen robe.
Yes. Cotton gauze absorbs moisture and dries quickly. It won't feel as thick as terry, but many people prefer it for exactly that reason.
Like most natural cotton, gauze can relax and soften after washing. Always follow the care label on your robe.
Muslin. Its open, layered weave is the most breathable of the three.
